Sembliance was originally part of my 10 Games in 10 Weeks projects but I picked it up again for a month-long group project in a studio class. My original prototype was simple and focused on the mechanics of maintaining the momentum of gravity by switching between two opposite cities while they slowly move closer to one another. People enjoyed the original prototype but often found themselves lost or confused by their surroundings so we focused on helping the player orient themselves in subtle ways.
We added a lot more levels and brought in a story to help tutorialize what the player was doing in this simulated world and why. Throughout the game, the simulation will start to glitch and intentionally disorient the player. We wanted to create an experience that made the player feel like they were being rushed through these intense challenges while more was going on around them. With a month of production, we added seven levels, a voice-acted narrative, four original songs, and multiple new gameplay and art assets.
Sembliance is a futuristic 3D platforming simulation where the player must use momentum and flipping polarity to overcome various puzzles before time is up.
My lead roles were game director, project manager, and lead programmer.
