Queen B. is heavily inspired by my days playing Starcraft 2. The theme of the game jam was “Collective Action” which drew my mind to the Zerg of Starcraft. However, with my game, I wanted to combine aspects from both the RTS genre as well as the MOBA genre. Control the queen and maneuver around the space while controlling your swarm separate from your queen. I wanted the player to feel weak when alone but use strategy and army-building tactics to become strong. As part of my 10 Games in 10 Weeks challenge, I realized I was avoiding sound design because of the amount of time it can take to get good audio so I decided to use the sounds of my Starcraft. The combined use of multiple sound fonts along with the visual effects I created made the game feel like there was a lot more going on than there really was. This taught me more about the importance of sound and how it reinforces how the player feels about their actions.

Queen B.

Queen B. is a prototype I made about a queen of a swarm breaking out of a containment cell to consume and grow her brood. There are 4 different types of creatures your Swarmling can evolve into: Broodlings, Banelings, Speedlings, and Voidlings. Each of these creatures has different skills but they also don’t get along too well.
