The theme of the 2019 Global Game Jam was “What Does Home Mean To You”, and we wanted to make a game that mimicked the vibe of our home. Somewhere to chill, play games, and talk.

1403 is a game some friends and I made for the 2019 Global Game Jam. This was my first time working with nearly every contributor but being a group of close friends helped us all agree on what to do about the theme “What does home mean to you?” As most of us share a home, we decided it was best to make a game about our experiences that make this apartment room a home rather than a place to live.
A lot of our closest moments are expressed while we play games. That doesn’t mean we’re not paying attention to one another, we just bond over the time we spend while playing. When we showcased our game at the NYU game jam event, it was interesting to see what people focused on. Some players didn’t care for the conversation with the friend at all and just focused on getting a high score on the TV. Others, however, put the controller down and focused on the narrative and conversation we crafted.
Overall, the response to the game was extremely positive and it became the first game we were all proud to show others. We were the only team of undergrads at the event but we still managed to be nominated for Best Narrative and Best Visuals.
